Traumatic Brain Injury

TBI symptoms can be immediate or may develop for hours, days or even weeks later. Some signs (headache dizziness, headache) are physical, while others may be related to emotions, memory, concentration or behavioral issues. TBI patients may also have trouble moving or having problems with balance and vision.

The brain injury caused by a TBI can be caused by a bump, a blow or jolt to the head whether from a blunt force or penetrating wound (such as a bullet). The impact can cause skull fracture that can cause bleeding and bruises of the brain inside the skull. The brain may then swell, pushing against the skull, causing a cut in blood flow. The injury can affect the entire brain, or a specific lobe of the brain.

Certain TBIs can be classified as closed, and others as open. The classification is determined by whether or not the skull has been fractured and whether the skull was shattered or opened by the impact. TBIs range in severity, from concussions all the way to coma. Patients with TBI are at a higher risk of developing depression, PTSD and other mental health issues. Certain studies suggest that having a variety of moderate to severe TBIs could increase the risk of developing dementia and other movement disorders later in life.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a condition that occurs when an individual experiences a trauma. The symptoms can start when the event has ended or a few years later. PTSD can cause problems at work, at home, and even in relationships. It can also lead to dependence, which includes alcohol or other drugs.

Symptoms can be treated with psychotherapy, such as eye movement desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) or cognitive processing therapy. Some sufferers of PTSD benefit by taking antidepressants, such as selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitors or SNRIs. These medications can help control symptoms and make daily activities more enjoyable.

A few studies are looking at ways to prevent PTSD by examining the possibility that genes or the brain may affect a person's reaction to trauma. Other studies are looking at how a normal stress response changes into PTSD and how to treat it earlier.

Conley Monk is a Vietnam War veteran, who has been fighting for medical benefits as well as housing and education benefits for more than 50 years. The lawsuit is being handled by Yale Law School’s Veterans Legal Services Clinic.
